Five Free Urban Fantasy Books with a Twist

written by Betsy Flak on 2018-04-16

All right, so I started out perusing Amazon, looking for some good free Urban Fantasy books. In the process, I stumbled onto a few "totally not your run-of-the-mill Urban Fantasy" free books. So, that's what I'm sharing today! We've got two paranormal-meets-historical-fiction, two comedy-meets-Urban-Fantasy, and one book with bloodthirsty unicorns that I couldn't resist.

Make sure to check the price before you buy. As always, prices are subject to change!

A Hidden Fire (Elemental Mysteries Book One) by Elizabeth Hunter

  • In a nutshell: Paranormal romance meets historical fiction meets mystery. Searching for a mysterious manuscript, two people follow a twisted maze from the archives of a university library through the fires of Renaissance Florence.
  • Series Name and Number of Books: Elemental Mysteries, 4 books (as of the date of this post)

Bound by a Dragon (The Dragon Archives Book 1) by Linda K. Hopkins

  • In a nutshell: Paranormal romance meets historical fiction. This time it's dragon-shifters in medieval times.
  • Series Name and Number of Books: The Dragon Archives, 4 books (as of the date of this post)

Special Offers (The Coursodon Dimension Book 1) by M.L. Ryan*

  • In a nutshell: Comedic fantasy meets Urban Fantasy. Snarky heroine buys kindle, gets possessed by equally snarky demon. Supernatural suspense + quirky humor + mayhem.
  • Series Name and Number of Books: The Coursodon Dimension, 6 books (as of the date of this post)
  • *This book is part of Kindle Unlimited (KU), making it always free for KU members. For those of you not in KU, it may not be free for you right now, but it will likely be free for a few days in the future. If it's not free now, either join Kindle Unlimited or keep an eye out for it to be free in the future!

A Quest of Undoing (Tales from the Land of Ononokin Book 1) by John P. Logsdon and Christopher P. Young*

  • In a nutshell: A drunk, lazy wizard must restore three cursed misfits to their former glory in this madcap adventure. Comedic fantasy. Side note: this was listed as an Urban Fantasy, but I'm not 100% sure that's right. If you're looking for strict Urban Fantasy, proceed with caution.
  • Series Name and Number of Books: Tales from the Land of Ononokin, 7 books (as of the date of this post)
  • *This book is part of Kindle Unlimited (KU), making it always free for KU members. For those of you not in KU, it may not be free for you right now, but it will likely be free for a few days in the future. If it's not free now, either join Kindle Unlimited or keep an eye out for it to be free in the future!

Necessary Magic (Wolf and Unicorn Book 1) by Val St. Crowe

  • In a nutshell: Bloodthirsty unicorns! Plus a werewolf, witches, and a "scavenger and thief extraordinaire".
  • Series Name and Number of Books: Wolf and Unicorn, 3 books (as of the date of this post)

As usual, I have a to-read list about a mile long, so I don't know when I'll get to these. Although, I have to admit: I'm very interested in that unicorn series. My inner-ten-year-old-who's-obsessed-with-horses is screaming at me to abandon my current book and read it NOW.
