Off to Seattle...to play roller derby!

written by Betsy Flak on 2019-09-02

First off, happy Labor Day to those of you in the US!

And now on to today's goods. If you've been following me for a while, you know that my passions are reading, writing, and roller derby (exact order changes daily if not by the minute :p). Well, my team, the Ann Arbor Brawlstars is headed to international roller derby playoffs. Out of more than 300 ranked teams in the world, we're #25!

To celebrate this season and going to playoffs, one of my teammates made this sweet hype video. I'm #48 in white and the one doing a split jerk in it. :)

Pssst...want to help us get to Seattle? Or just want a cool shirt or sticker? Go to https://teespring.com/stores/a2rd-charter to get your limited-edition shirt or sticker today!

September 2019 goals

written by Betsy Flak on 2019-08-26

It's the end of the month, which means it's goals time! This month, we're a little early due to the upcoming labor day holiday here in the US. Because of that, I might project what I think will get done this week here and there.

As usual, I'll update the progress on August's goals, then set new goals for September.

Recommendations from The Troupe

written by Betsy Flak on 2019-08-19

One thing I'm always looking for is my next really-great, can't-put-it-down-for-a-second, oops-I-forgot-to-eat book. After all, that's one thing we share: a love of books and stories.

However, I'm not the fastest reader by any stretch of the imagination, so I can't always get through all the book recommendations I receive (and certainly not in a timely manner). So, I periodically gather them all together, then pass them on to you! You may—okay, probably—read more books than I do.

Without further ado, here are ten books Troupe members have recommended to me over the past several months.

Vacation-in-the-UP pics!

written by Betsy Flak on 2019-08-12

Just like that, I'm back from my vacation to the upper peninsula of Michigan. It was beee-yoot-iful up there. The weather was gorgeous the vast majority of the time with temperatures in the low 80s and high 70s (Fahrenheit). With only a couple of stormy evenings, it was pretty much ideal.

So, we were able to do all the things!

We hiked a bunch, including one day with a trail that was marked as "moderate" at the bottom and "difficult" at the top and another day of almost 10 miles and 25,000+ steps according to my phone. (Keep in mind I've only done a couple of hikes before this trip. Ever.)

We kayaked around Pictured Rocks (the pictures in the link below honestly don't do it justice).

We wandered around Mackinac Island to see all the things (and the horses!). We biked around the outside of the island too—which included me re-learning how to ride a bike since it's been about five years.

We watched ships go through the locks at Sault Ste. Marie.

And we even got some relaxing in! In between delicious meals, I finished Unnecessary Magic, then read all of Louisiana Bigshot (a mystery, a genre I rarely read), and then started in on Empire of Storms, the fifth book of the Throne of Glass series.

All in all, it was a great vacation. :)

Check out my favorite pics (out of over 500, lol) here or below.

I'm on vacation! And so is the blog.
