Survey Results: What kind of magic should I feature in my next stand-alone prequel?

written by Betsy Flak on 2018-06-06

A little over a week ago, I asked my readers what kind of magic I should feature in my next stand-alone prequel. As a reminder, this prequel will be written and released chapter-by-chapter to my readers group, The Troupe. Periodically, I'll ask readers for input about the details of the story and/or where it should go next.

As of right now, this prequel will focus on how Gnash, one of Duncan's vampire lieutenants, became a vampire. It starts with with Sam (Gnash's human name) on a summer internship in Los Angeles. She's got three potential love interests: a vampire on the run from Duncan; a Diviner (a vampire hunter who uses magic to fight vampires) who's been excused from active duty; and her very-human, very-ex boyfriend. Part 1 is all about Sam discovering these love interests, culminating in a choice between them, which is where you readers will step in!

Now that the background's taken care of, we can move on to last week's question: What kind of magic should Sam's Diviner love interest have? The survey's closed, so I can now reveal the answer.

He will be a Fire Diviner with some Healing powers!

As you can see from the image above, almost 40% of those who voted thought Fire should be Bobby's (Sam's Diviner love interest's) primary magic. I ended up adding Healing in because:

  1. In the question where you could check as many different types of magic as you wanted, Healing only got one vote less than Fire.
  2. In the world of The Clan-Vampire Clash, Elementals (Fire, Water, Wind, Earth) don't usually have Spirit Divining powers (Healing, casting spells, essentially any magic not elemental in nature). I like writing about unique characters and the mix of Fire and Healing in Bobby intrigued me. It opens up all sorts of fun conflicts like how that would affect Bobby fighting alongside Warriors, how it affects his personality (Fire Diviners are usually full of personality whereas Healers are more calm), and how his Healing might affect his Fire Divining itself (Fire Diviners typically die by going boom! and exploding, but how would Bobby's Healing affect that?).

So that's it. Bobby, Sam/Gnash's Diviner love interest, will be a Fire Diviner-slash-Healer.
