Since it's so close to Halloween, I thought I would go with my perennial Halloween costume for about five years running during my pre-teen years: Dorothy Gale from The Wizard of Oz. P.S. Sorry I don't have a picture handy of tween-me dressed up as Dorothy. If I had one, I would totally post it!
Obviously, I was really into Wizard of Oz as a kid. The songs, the story, the villains, I loved it all, even though Dorothy isn't my usual strong heroine running around kicking everyone's butts.
But Dorothy is kind. She befriends misfits. When she kills the wicked witches, it's by accident. She dreams of a world without troubles and ends up in one with nothing but magical adventures (something I always wanted as a kid--and maybe still do :p). Plus she's got Toto, and she does fight for him. Dorothy may not be my usual heroine, but she does have some spice mixed into her overwhelming amount of sugar.

Or watch Judy Garland sing "Somewhere over the rainbow" as Dorothy. Her voice still gives me chills.
